Let It Be Known...

...that I officially stink at knitting.

Ok, perhaps I should cut myself some slack - it is my first day of trying, after all.  But after watching countless videos, collecting tips from friends hither and yon, and reading article after article, I have so far managed to accomplish:

  • tying, untying, and re-tying my yarn in a large knot, the likes of which could only be interpreted by a sailor,
  • procuring a "yarn burn" on my index finger,
  • knocking my glasses from my face, therefore
  • nearly stabbing myself in the eye,
  • and unwittingly teaching my {almost} three year old to use the term "balls" as a substitute for an expletive.  {Not very proud of that one.}

I had a grandiose vision of my husband modeling a handsomely crafted new scarf this winter.  I'm beginning to fear that he may be using a lopsided hanky sometime this summer instead.  :(

There has to be an easier way, right?!?!?

{I'm always trying a wacky new project.  I'd love it if you would supervise my progress! }

I tried knitting once and realized that I am not coordinated enough for it. Unfortunately. It's all still sitting in a drawer waiting for one of my kids to try it! (And maybe be better at it than I was!)

the best way is to learn it from someone, perhaps a grandma :) I have tried books and videos but 1k 1p 2tog 2k 2kpk etc never makes sense :D

Hang in there! It is really hard getting started. I learned 12 years ago, and got the hang of it within a few months. It felt like your fingers were all over the place at first, but it will get easier. I wish I could be there to help!

I've heard that it's easy once you get the hang of it! Hope it gets easier!

I have yet to try knitting but I'm not good at crocheting. It takes too much of me - I just get stressed about it (stupid, I know). I just want it all to be perfect. I made 2 things crocheted. Two blankets. My son's came apart in the wash. I don't know if my niece's ever gets used.

If you find that there is an easier way...please tell me! I've always pictured myself knitting away but it is so frustrating! :D

Ok, I don't want to jump to any final decisions on this but let's just kinda come up with a few back up plans....just in case. Not that I think you won't take to knitting or anything.... ;)

You're not alone. I've tried...and will try again, I'm sure. I had all these visions of knitting hats and booties and sweaters for my first baby...now my 2nd baby is 8 months and so far I've finished nothing. Every time I've tried I lose count or just get confused. It's so frustrating because it FEELS like something I should love. Ugh. Oh well. Keep trying!

I want to like knitting. I really really do, but I really really can't get the hang of it :( My mother knits like crazy, sweaters, socks for all of us, but I just can't!
But I think you should give it a couple tries :)

Might I offer a little encouragement here? I can knit the basic stitch. I learned mostly from looking at photos online, but had a little help from my grandmother. It's not hard doing the basic stitch, but I don't know about the others. It took me about half an hour to get the basic stitch downpat.

Which stitch are you doing?

I greatly admire you for trying knitting! I just feel sure that you will be great at it. Maybe try again tomorrow?

You are so cute and when it comes to knitting, I'm right there with you! Practice and patience is all I can say. Don't be so hard on yourself!! You'll get it. At first, I could not for the life of me "cast on". I just didn't get it. My dear husband went on to YouTube to find me a video [tutorial] that spelled it out for me and then I got it. Yay! So, if you haven't yet, check YouTube! :)

Two words- Nifty Knitter! So simple to use and your husband will be able to model that scarf in only a few hours. Best wishes!

You get an A+ in my book just for trying!!
Light years ahead of me!

I'm sure anything you make would be better than what I could do. Stick with it!!

Yes, and the easier way would be buying one..heehee.

BUT, I think it's great that you are trying to knit one on your own!! Homemade gifts are the best!

I stink at it too. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to hold those needles.

Hey, I think it's hilarious you're teaching your daughter to use the word "balls" - that'll get a few raised eyebrows someday out in public! You are TOOOOO funny! Way to give it the ol' college try ~ I'm sure it's very easy (spoken by someone who's never done it in her life). ha ha Have a good day ~ ♥

Perhaps consider crochet? Basic stitches in crochet are very easy to do---the simplest thing ever is to make a scarf. Get some quick-knit wide gauge yarn and a large crochet needle and give it a try!

Heh..."balls". Funny. Keep at it! (The knitting, I mean. ;-)

Well, at least there's something you aren't good at...it seems as though you excel at everything you put your mind and hands to!

But, you know the old saying, "practice makes perfect." So don't give up just yet!

Oh, I remember the first day I was teaching myself to knit. From a book. I couldn't figure out how to cast on for several hours! I have it figured out now, but I'm sure my "technique" is probably a little bit off! Keep trying - it will get better!

Don't feel bad. I felt the SAME way the last time I tried to knit. By the end of the day, those knitting needles were stabbed right into a large ball of yarn.

Traci Michele said...

keep at it... although, it can get addicting once you get the hang of it.

Just a friendly warning :-)

Hugs,
Traci
